Vitamin D Injection: D2 and D3 Explained
Make sense of D2, D3 and colecalciferol when comparing vitamin D products.
What do D2 and D3 mean?
Vitamin D2 is called ergocalciferol. Vitamin D3 is called cholecalciferol, also spelt colecalciferol. Both belong to the vitamin D family. These names identify the form, rather than the way a product is taken.
Seeing a longer scientific name can make a label look more complicated than it is. Once you recognise D3 and colecalciferol as the same ingredient name, comparison becomes easier.
Do the forms behave identically?
Research has investigated differences between D2 and D3. A University of Surrey research review found that D2 supplementation reduced circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 compared with control or D3 supplementation.
That result concerns a particular blood marker. It should not be translated into a promise that every D3 product produces a noticeable wellbeing benefit, or that a particular injection is the right choice.
Form and format are separate
A capsule, liquid or injectable product may use a vitamin D ingredient, but its format and instructions still need checking. The letters D3 do not mean a product should be injected.
Compare the ingredient name first, then the strength, serving or container size and directions. A shared ingredient does not make two different formats interchangeable.
What about plant-based choices?
People following a vegetarian or vegan diet should check the exact product. The ingredient source, capsule shell and other ingredients can affect suitability. Do not rely on the vitamin name alone; our plant-based guide explores this further.
Keep comparisons useful
- Look for the stated D2 or D3 form.
- Compare quantities using matching units.
- Read the instructions for that exact format.
- Check ingredients against your preferences and allergies.
The aim is to understand what you are looking at, rather than choose by the longest name or the largest number. If you are comparing products for an existing treatment plan, ask the responsible professional before switching.
Vitamin D injections: product information
When exploring vitamin D injections, check the exact product details. A vitamin D injection has its own route and instructions; everyday supplement advice should not be used as an injection schedule.
